  1. 1. “Dirty Little Secrets” –All American Rejects
This song represents Mayella and her father and their secrets. The songs talks about the different secrets one has and their secret is the worst of all—incest. Their secret causes a huge rift in the town and the loss of two lives, along with childhood innocence.
    2. “Breakin’ “—All American Rejects
This song represents the pain Tom’s wife (Helen) feels when her husband is taken into custody, jailed, and then killed. Tom literally has a broken spirit when he is declared “guilty”, even though he and everyone else know that he is innocent. He is merely convicted because his accuser is a white female. It also portrays the court’s inability to uphold the law and it’s breakage beneath the name of racism.
    3. “Shameless”—All Time Low
This song represents the jury that convicted Tom and Mayella, Mayella and her father, and the system that convicted an innocent man. It is shameless that an entire town could be swayed by the color of a man’s skin and ever more shameful that a democratic system could yield and bend to these opinions.
    4. “Innocence”—The Airborne Toxic Event
The song represents Tom. I think the title speaks for itself.
    5. “Unbreakable”—Alicia Keys
This song represents Atticus, Jem, and Scout. They all stand tall during the trial and the fallout afterwards. They do not allow society to bend them or force them to sacrifice their morals/ethics.
    6. “Ties that Bind”—Alter Bridge
This song represents everyone in the book—it’s the idea that everyone is tied together and the actions of one affect the rest.
    7. “Help!”—Beatles
This song represents Tom’s cry for help in the courtroom, Mayella’s fake cry for help, and the voiceless cry of society for change. Everyone within the book is calling for help with something; Tom’s cry is just the most apparent.
    8. “Stand By Me”—Ben E. King
This song is for Tom and Atticus. Even though Atticus knows that he will not win the first case, he fights anyway and stays Tom’s lawyer during the appeal process. Also, Scout , Jem, and Calpurnia support Atticus through the trial and afterwards.
    9. “The City is At War”—Cobra Starship
This song represents the separation within the town that was caused by the court case. There are two sides of thought—Tom is innocent and Toms is guilty. The differing sides literally tear the town apart.
    10. “Hallelujah”—Rufus Wainwright
This song represents the hope for a better future and the present turmoil caused by the court case.

  2. 1. "Mercy" -Dave Matthews Band
I chose this song for Scout. For overcoming obstacles and to continue to see the beauty in the world and to stand up for what is right.
    2. "Cat's in the Cradle" -Harry Chapin
I know the ultimate story of the song is depressing, but I think it shows how much Jem looks up to Atticus and wants to be just like him when he is older.
    3. "Everyday People" -Sly and the Family Stone
This song talks about how people dislike one another for reasons that don't make much sense, like skin color. This is a continued theme throughout the entire novel.
    4. "Man Down" -Rihanna
I chose this song for Mayella, because I don't believe that she really wanted her accusation to get as far out of control as it did. I think she was more afraid of her father and the situation that she created.
    5. "Hide and Seek" -Imogen Heap
This song really portrays confusion, and I think that's what Scout feels about racism, wondering why everybody can't just get along for the kinds of people they are rather than skin color.
    6. "Confessions" -City and Colour
This song is about a man writing down his sins in front of a judge, and I thought it portrayed the trial well.
    7. "Broken Things" -Dave Matthews Band
This song is about finding your way and growing in the face of adversity, and I thought it was representative of Jem.
    8. "Beautiful" -Christina Aguelera
I chose this song for Scout because she is constantly told by her Aunt Alexandra that she is not lady-like enough or that she needs to change her ways.
    9. "Jumper"- Third Eye Blind
For Tom because when everything went bad he ended it for himself, but he shouldn't have done so. He lost hope.
    10. "Titanium" -David Guetta
I chose this song because of the few people throughout the novel who stood up in the face of adversity and at the risk of getting put down by others in the town, such as Atticus, Jem, Scout, Boo, and Link Deas.
